Sustainability at NBJ Summit

Our Mission

We recognize that NBJ Summit has an immense impact on our local communities and global industry. Through our sustainability program, we are striving to better identify, understand, and proactively address environmental impacts, social sustainability, and sustainable development.

Environmental Sustainability

Waste Diversion

  • The venue has front-of-house and back-of-house recycling.
  • All meals are served on reusable service ware.
  • Flow water machines are throughout the venue to allow for easy water bottle refill in reusable water bottles we provide to attendees.
  • Water bottles are 90% recycled post-consumer stainless steel, with an inner wall composed of recycled polypropylene.

Energy & Travel

  • Carbon from staff travel is automatically offset.
  • Attendees have the opportunity to offset their carbon emissions through registration.

Procurement/Materials

  • Hotel keycards are made from sustainably sourced bamboo, replacing traditional plastic keycards.
  • Attendee bags are made from rPET recycled fabric, and webbing is made from plastic bottles. Each attendee bag keeps 8.28 plastic bottles out of the landfill.
  • Lanyards are made from 100% rPET (recycled polyethylene terephthalate) plastic that is used to make packaging, such as plastic bottles and food containers.

Social Sustainability

Donations

  • Terranea collaborates with Chefs to End Hunger, a nonprofit organization that redistributes prepared food that would normally go to waste in hotels, restaurants, and other foodservice operations to local food agencies serving meals to those in need. Terranea regularly donates its safely chilled and unserved surplus food to the cause. Since 2017, the resort has donated more than 21,072 pounds of food through this program. That's 10.54 tons of "waste" diverted from the landfill to serve 17,560 meals.
  • Terranea also donates partially consumed, wholly usable toiletries left in guestrooms to the Midnight Mission in downtown Los Angeles. In one month alone, this can amount to over 380 pounds of toiletries diverted from the landfill and provided to those in need. Since the project started in December 2017, Terranea has donated 29,848 rolls of toilet paper and 63,442 bottles of partially consumer toiletries. That's more than 4.4 tons of "waste" diverted from the landfill to those in need.

Community Partnership & Accessibility

  • Important partnership with Women in Nutraceuticals, an organization that empowers women in nutraceuticals to unlock their personal and professional potential.
  • Our virtual show is open to everyone and features our entire education program, plus one-on-one networking opportunities with both virtual and in-person attendees.
  • The education program includes topics such as diversity and sustainability to influence the future of our industry.

Support Local

  • The venue supports sourcing by proudly partnering with Santa Monica Seafood, a family-owned business, and member of the Global Sustainable Seafood Initiative, National Fisheries Institute, and more.

Health & Wellness

  • NBJ Summit's venue encourages guests to explore its unique ecology and embrace environmentally-friendly practices through a variety of conservation programs, as well as exciting and educational activities. More than 14 acres of wildlife habitat surrounding the resort makes it easy to observe the local fauna at Terranea. The resort offers many opportunities to view a range of wildlife in their natural environs, from tracking whale migrations to spotting the endangered El Segundo Blue Butterfly, and more.
